I’d heard the whispers but ignored them: the discontinued masterpiece. Rave reviews on various boards. People scrounging everywhere for small decants, prized like saffron and meted out drop by precious drop. Okay – maybe I exaggerate, but Nicole Miller for Men certainly had its ardent fans – then again, doesn’t everything...except maybe Haggis, Natto, and Nasomatto Duro?
The reissue of Nicole Miller came forth, obviously reformulated but since I never tried the original – who cares? The packaging looks the same and the juice is now quite easy (and inexpensive) to obtain. So, I got a bottle, and also sent a decant to a friend who hadn’t tried much in terms of scents: this and five classics. This was his favorite.
Nicole Miller opens with a big boozy-fruity indolic opaqueness. I just can’t quite get my arms around this opening, despite wearing it for months. (Actually, off-and-on for 18 months now, but who’s counting?). It’s really not far from rum-soaked dried fruit (the opening salvo of fruitcake season, now that I think of it), with maybe a touch of smoky tobacco. Not much warmth here: where Amber Absolute has this burning center, Nicole Miller is dark and chilly.
Time passes, and the scent attenuates just a little bit: the notes shift and swirl around, not really straying far from the opening salvo: leather joins the mix and the sharper fruity notes die off. Towards the afternoon, sandalwood and vanilla join in to give a bit more warmth than had originally been evident.
The final verdict on Nicole Miller for Men, though...is ambiguous. I wear this on-and-off but haven’t really grown to crave it. There just doesn’t seem to be a spark in this one, a note that jumps out and says “Wear ME!” The notes – taken on their own are positive: I like these scents. But, not as combined and presented in Nicole Miller for Men.
