Encens Flamboyant (Annick Goutal)

By Thomas

When I attended Catholic school, I liked pretty well everything about it except for the school part, and that religion thing. School was drudgery, and the twice-weekly visits to the chapel just added an element of silence to the drudgery. I do remember the incense that they burned in the chapel, but I don’t recall appreciating it at all. Oh, how things change.

Goutal’s Encens Flamboyant doesn’t quite ring up the memories of cold mornings in the chapel, but it’s a good start if you want something that’s wintery without being syrupy or spicy/clove-y (or both). Encens Flamboyant starts off with a sharp blast of incense – frankincense and myrrh, pepper (the flamboyant part), and there seem to be a bit of lemon to lend a little body to it all.

Development is subtle: the lemon fades out and a light woodiness takes over – the pepper softens a bit and a wintery woody note comes around – balsam or fir, or maybe both. Again, the resinous incense blend continues to be the star of the show.

Encens Flamboyant is similar in temperament to Winter Delice, except that it effectively avoids the brittle tones and clove-y goodness (yes, yes – debatable, I know) of the latter, without going all mulled-wine and apple-cider. Well-balanced, strong projection, good longevity on my skin. Best for the cold, clear days of winter.
