Top Scents for Fall 2009

Mark

When Dane suggested it is time for us to make our lists of Fall Fragrances, for some unfathomable reason he and Thomas figured I would be flogging Chanel Cuir de Russie. You guys. Don't you know Cuir de Russie is my winter fragrance?

Fall has always been my favorite season. Relief from the heat of summer, the most beautiful colors in nature, and the knowledge that many warming and fattening meals lie ahead are just a few of the reasons. Being able to dive into my collection of heavier fragrances is one or perhaps many others.

So, what is tickling my fancy during these first few cool days?

Guerlain Bois d'Armenie - The warmth and sweetness of benzoin, balsam and incense, a little smoke like the first fire of the fall. This evokes, announces, and embraces the turn of seasons and is a light against the coming cold and darkness.

Serge Lutens Chergui - This one will bridge right into winter; leather and a plummy spice bomb. Exotic, warm, comforting and luxe.

Le Labo Patchouli 24
- Even in cool weather, sometimes you don't want warm and sweet. Patchouli 24, the Big Rasp, is like working on your motorcycle in an unheated garage. Leather, something stinging in the back of your throat, and the anticipation of the wind in your face. Goggles down; collar up. Let's ride.

Ah, fall…the time for Halloween, Thanksgiving, football, and turkey. And heavier scents – the sorts of scents that I wouldn’t dare reach for during the summer. But, why list the same-old-same-old winter scents: as marvelous as they tend to be *cough, Antaeus, Amber Absolute, cough*, when I can find the new and exciting – an early Christmas for my nose, even!

Without further ado…three recent additions to the winter Wardrobe:

L’Artisan Tea for Two – I know I just reviewed it, but seriously this is the first L’Artisan that I’ve really liked. Warm dry spicy tea-tobacco, well-balanced and comfortable. At home in a suit or a sweater and jeans. Bold, warm, centered, confident. Who wouldn’t like that?

Dunhill for Men
– Warm, dry, spicy balsam-woody. Still exploring this one but thus far it looks like this bottle will see some serious wear this winter, the colder the better. A dry, muted version of

Etro Messe de Minuit – Bought and forgotten a few years back. Recent testing of Etro Sandalo reminded me I had this and will put into this winter’s rotation. The perils of buying over the interwebz and then hiding from the Mrs.

And three more maybes:

Guerlain Vetiver (vintage) – I have a bottle and thought it would be really perverse if I tried this in the more modest days of winter. Not nearly as light as the current formula, probably for the better.

Knize Ten – I seem to have two formulas and will compare them carefully. I don’t think either is a fake, but I definitely like one better than the other.

Chanel Cuir de Russie – in case Mark forgets to mention this one.

My fall fav's are actually things I don't own...yet. I can't help it, I bore easily...nothing in my wardrobe seems up to par. Here are a few things on my wishlist that I think would be great for the upcoming colder months (hint hint Santa).

Chanel Cuir de Russie
- I know...it's like a running joke with us, but in all seriousness, I must own this. I don't even care that it comes in a big jug that I'll never finish. It's complex, haunting, and I fantasize about it daily. Sad, I know.

Missoni - I've been working my way through a decent sized decant of this, and my love has only intensified. Frankly, it's not all that suitable for fall/winter, what with being a fruity floral, but I don't care...it has chocolate...that's kinda wintery, no?

Serge Lutens Santal Blanc - I was back and forth with my opinion on this one for some time. I loved the cumin, I hated the cumin...it's too sweet, it's too floral, it smells nothing like actual sandalwood, etc. etc. Santal Blanc and I have worked through our problems and I can't no longer be without him.

  1. You guys don't get a lot of comments, but I wanted to say thanks for the great reviews. You're one of the few men's perfumes blogs around, and I love reading you stuff.
