I have good news and bad news. The good news - YR's Gardenia is a very true* representation of the flower, and if you're a lover of scents like Tom Ford's Velvet Gardenia, this easily stands tall next to it. The bad news - I still don't like gardenia. Not so much bad news for you I guess...
The number of gardenia fragrances on the market isn't lacking. Goutal has a few, Estee Lauder, Michael Storer, Jo Malone, Floris, and of course the classics like Piguet's Fracas. Goutal's are more tuberose than gardenia, Michael Storer's Stephanie seems to focus more on being a flower than a perfume, and Tom Ford goes right for your throat with too much of everything. Yves Rocher gets a few things right - they represent the flower properly (with notes of blue cheese, smoke, and wet soil), they keep the volume at a bearable level, and they do it on the cheap. As with yesterday's review of their mimosa rendition, YR's Pur Desir line seems to capture the essence of perfumer's favourite flowers like no other. Niche lines should take note.
*Now comes the disclaimer. Am I overtly familiar with gardenia in real life? Of course not...I'm Canadian! I live in an igloo and mush huskies to get groceries! All joking aside, I base much of my gardenia know-how on my experience in perfume. If anyone wants to send me a real gardenia (Fedex?), I'll be more than happy to re-evaluate my thoughts.
