Ubar (Amouage)

By Dane
Do you ever have those days where you just don't feel like spraying anything on in the morning? The only thing you could possibly stomach is a brief Eau de Cologne spritz, something flat and linear, or even nothing at all? Well, dear readers, Amouage is not for you. Grand scents like Ubar are all-day investments. Sometimes a bit tiring, but overall, unlike anything else.

Ubar was originally released in 1995, for some reason cut off, and is now back. I have no experience with the original, but the current is nothing short of marvelous. The complexities in this fragrance are unreal. I can't imagine anyone catching every nuance in less than a dozen wearings. Ubar helps return Amouage to its former glory of rich, exotic scents that smell almost as expensive as they cost.

Ubar opens with a blast of raw animal. Your typical perfume would save any animalic tones for the drydown, but Ubar goes right for the throat. Surprisingly, a bright ray of sunshine follows the paw-prints with an aldehydic citrus. I have to say I wasn't expecting this part...and at first I found it off-putting, but as fragrances like Jubilation XXV have taught me, you can have oriental style without the feeling of weight. The heart of the scent is a lush floral. Transparent, balanced, and rich. Just when you think the scent is fading, the beast returns with a sweet vanillic civet...a perfect finale.

I have to admit, the cost of the Amouage fragrances frightens me. In our fragile economy, will a perfume house based on sheer luxury thrive? I can't answer that question with any certainty, but upon smelling the beauty of Ubar, I nearly threw wads of cash at the sales assistant in a wild frenzy. Of course, not being in possession of wads of cash helped alleviate that situation.

Year: 1995/2009
Notes: Lemon, Bergamot, Lily of the Valley, Jasmine, Rose, Civet, Vanilla

  1. I want Ubar really really really really bad. I haven't even sniffed it yet. I love potent perfumes that are an all day investment, like you said ;-)

Thanks for the review - which only worsens my longing for this stuff.

  2. The first time I sniffed Ubar, I was hooked. It is very complex and fresh and rich. Indeed,it is one of the most perfect fragrances that I have ever had the pleasure to wear. Fortunately, I threw my mastercard at aedes.com and they sent me a bottle. Yea- Ubar is an all day affair but it's an orgasmic all day affair.

I sent my best perfumista friend a sample and now she's in love also. I feel responsible for this-so, I can't wait to give it to her for her birthday.

  3. I am very fond of Ubar. As this nice review says, it is really unlike anything else - this was also my thought, until I smelled Le De by Givenchy. Can you please compare both fragrances and tell me if I am right? Many Amouage frags have their idea in older perfumes, so may be with Ubar?! Thank you a lot!!
