Maurice Roucel has a vast portfolio of perfumes under his belt - from huge hits like Gucci Envy and Hermes' 24, Faubourg, to fan favourites like Malle's Musc Ravageur and Rochas' Tocade. While he is undoubtedly brilliant, I can't say I'm his biggest fan. A few of his scents seem to have hit the right note for me (KenzoAir, Nautica Voyage), but for the most part, I find his use of strong synthetics problematic.
Now, if you're done punching your computer monitor, I'll make everything right. Missoni's (latest) eponymous scent clearly demonstrates the perfect balance between complexity and crudeness. I have no doubt that this fragrance will be the crowning achievement of Roucel's work. The radiance given off by wearing a drop of this gem lights up the room like no other.
Missoni is one of those strange creatures that seem to shape-shift and project a different note each time you smell them. From orange-citrus to tropical fruits to white flowers to chocolate, you really never know what you're going to catch next. Calling this scent complex would be putting it lightly. While listing those notes together might make your stomach turn a little, somehow it all blends cohesively and leaves you with a trail of sunshine.
Even if you find it unwearable, you won't be able to deny that it's brilliant - Missoni is liquid art at its finest.

I love Roucel. Not as much as Ropion, but I'm a big fan. Gucci Envy, 24 Faubourg and Musc Rav are all great.
ReplyDeleteMissoni is really good. I have it, don't wear it, but I still like it :-)
Rochas Tocade...hmm...that's one I never understood. It smells like cotton candy with a dollop of rose in the beginning which vanishes. Maybe I have the awful reformulation and not the original?
I have never even tought about that perfume until I´ve read your review and now I´ve got cravings for it! :)
