I admit, I judge the book by its cover. In the case of Diesel's Fuel For Life duo, that meant completely ignoring them altogether. The name "Diesel" is enough to keep me from picking up the bottle, and when sheathed in Cyndi Lauper's old lace glove...well, you get the picture.
I can also admit that now and then something truly surprises me. In Diesel's case, it wasn't the men's scent (although decent, the synthetic drydown overpowered), but the women's that struck my fancy. An excellent example of a perfumer's skill when given a limited budget and in turn producing something solid and rich. From the peppered berry topnote to the fruity Sarrasins-esque jasmine heart, FFLPF is, dare I say, too good for its namesake. Even the drydown's patchouli and clean-musk combo keeps its chin up where most would have cowered and fallen apart.
Don't get me wrong, I don't have a beef with Diesel, but something of this caliber could easily have graced Guerlain or Chanel's main collections (although more likely Thierry Mugler's).
Year: 2007
