Gris Clair (Serge Lutens)

by Mark

First impression is of cold, sharp, sweet lavender candy. The coldness and sharpness are remarkably palpable. The sweetness lifts to reveal a smoky incense quality that somehow remains cold.

Eventually the balance swings back to confectionery lavender, almost cotton-candy-like.

Thereafter, the sweet aspect and smoky aspect play tag, until they both begin to fade and a woody third leg appears to carry them off.

This is one of the more straightforward and spare fragrances from the laboratory of Lutens and Sheldrake. Even so, I wish the sweetness was a little less pronounced; I think it would be better unsweetened.

Perfumer: Christopher Sheldrake
Year: 2006
Notes: Ashes, Lavender
