I received a sample of Aoud Lime with my recent purchase of Original Aoud...thus far the only scent from the Montale range that struck my fancy. I can see why Aoud Lime is so popular, so much so that at first sniff, I thought I had possibly made a mistake and purchased the wrong bottle. Could this magical creature be even better than my beloved Original Aoud?
Short answer - no. Aoud Lime has a breathtaking opening of medicinal aoud mixed with a bright, fizzy note that one assumes is the lime (although I agree with other reviews that I don't detect any actual lime, more the feeling of it). Judging a Montale scent on the opening notes is usually a mistake, and this case was no different. Soon a spicy rose creeps up and completely takes over. At this point, the associations with other Montale rose-aoud combos is evident. I should say that Aoud Lime is quite beautiful, and I might even want a bottle one day, but the reason I fell so deeply for Original Aoud was the simplicity, and the lack of other heavy notes to get in the way of the star.
Aoud Lime lasts forever, just as you'd expect. I don't know how Montale does it, but many of their scents only grow stronger with time, and AL borders on cloying at some points. I have a sample of Black Aoud on the way to re-try for comparison, but from what I remember, Aoud Lime is tamer, more wearable overall, and has much more distinction between the top, middle, and basenotes. If you're planning on trying the Montale line, this one should definitely be part of the pack...just be prepared to invest a lot of time wearing it, because it doesn't wash off.
Perfumer: Pierre Montale
