L'Homme Sage (Divine)

by Mark

I first wore L'Homme Sage a year ago, and it upset me so much I didn't wear it again until very recently, though I have thought about it from time to time. More on that later.

The opening is a beautiful mélange of citrus, an herbal accord, and incense. As the citrus fades, the fragrance gradually becomes more spicy and slightly sweet as the cardamom and lychee gain ascendancy.

Patchouli and amber round things out a bit, making the incense more creamy, while the pungent spices remain.

Longevity is excellent. Towards the end, the aromatic woods hold court, surrounded by the remaining patchouli, amber and spices.

In reviewing what I wrote about it a year ago in correspondence with a friend, I find that I cannot improve on my complaints, such as they are, so I will reproduce the summary here:

It actually upsets me how good this is, and I have collected a number of things I don't like about it, so I will not have to think about buying it...

1. Too perfect. No imperfection, no wabi sabi, no blemish to cherish.
2. Plays it safe, in a way; very modern in its carefully crafted, obviously gorgeous and perfect way. I guess this is the same as 1. and it bugs me.
3. Too masculine. All yang and no yin. No gender ambiguity at all; this reeks of insecurity to me. Again, stays carefully within boundaries.

So there you have it; a beautiful fragrance, perhaps a bit annoying in its perfection. Nothing weird, nothing dirty. But if you like Clark Kent, or the Victoria's Secret Angels, you might very well love this. It is (too) gorgeous.

Perfumer: Yann Vasnier
