2007 brought the highly anticipated release of Lancôme's "La Collection", a series of reinterpreted (or original) classics from the company's archives. Cuir was definitely the most highly anticipated amongst the group, and most were not disappointed.
The original Cuir was said to have been deeply animalic, while the reissue is nothing of the sort. I'd classify it as more of a quiet floral-amber with a touch of leather in the background. I'm not sure what exactly I was expecting, but I can say that it was not this.
Cuir opens with a mildly fruity accord. A faint leather note progresses while the styrax grounds everything with a doughy thickness. The middle stages of scent offer some muskiness, which of all, was my favourite stage. All-in-all it has a classic, vintage feeling and while elegant and refined, remains ever-so-slightly edgy in a way.
If you're expecting Bandit or Rien, you'll be disappointed. Once I got over the fact that something named "leather" had only a faint hint of it, I grew to enjoy the other aspects. Well done.
