Eau de Guerlain (Guerlain)

By Dane

The traditional Eau de Cologne recipe is popular for a reason - it smells great. Most houses have their own version of it, or have tried to update it one way or another. Guerlain has several great historical recipes, Chanel has a beautiful rendition, as do Parfums di Nicolai, Comme des Garcons, and Institut Tres Bien. Which you choose depends on your tastes and what you look for in an EDC...but more importantly, most choose based on their budget.

Eau de Guerlain falls in the middle of the EdC's cost-wise. Not cheap by any means (compared to something like 4711), but nothing outlandish (compared to Chanel). What differentiates EdG from (some of) the pack is that it comes with an extra - a drydown. Most EdC's last an hour if you're lucky, but in the past few decades, perfumers have realized that adding certain elements to the base of a formula can both enhance the topnotes, and leave something on your skin for any given period of time. Guerlain opted for "earthy forest notes and tonka bean" (as per their notes), but what I smell is musk...albeit a decent musk (although nothing compared to Chanel's).

To sum up - citrus...then musk. If that's what you're looking for, EdG is a great option. Not really much else to say...

Year: 1974
Perfumer: Jean-Paul Guerlain
Notes: Lemon, Verbena, Bergamot, Neroli, Earthy Forest Notes, Tonka Bean
