Bois d'Orage / French Lover (Frederic Malle)

Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless
by Mark

I am not sure what I was expecting from this, but I was surprised. Cool, green, fruity, flowery and mossy, it is both modern and evocative of the classics. Not sweet and not citric, not masculine or feminine, it reminds me of a lot of things, none of which I can readily identify, and also seems like a new creation, an undiscovered island of scent.

The description on the Frederic Malle web site begins "A new interpretation of Angelica", and angelica is indeed the first thing I smell, and the dominant scent throughout. I find very little development in this; the galbanum in the opening fades gradually into the cedar and incense, but angelica holds sway over all and unifies everything.

There is no mention of oakmoss in the listed notes, but moss is beautifully rendered.

This is a beautifully composed and blended, subtly sensual fragrance... I am beguiled.

Note: This fragrance is called Bois d'Orage in the United States and Canada, and French Lover everywhere else.

Perfumer: Pierre Bourdon
Year: 2007
Notes: Galbanum, Angelica, Pimento, Cedarwood, Iris, Incense, Patchouli, Vetiver, Musk

  1. This one always baffled me...what's Malle's obsession with having two concentrations of the same scent? I guess Ellen's initial works don't last long enough for him? FL, to me, is Angeliques Sous La Pluis + a heavy synthetic musk.

  2. I guess they changed the name for the US because they were afraid we would call it Freedom Lover.

  3. Yes, Kathleen, and then we would remake Breathless with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston in the lead roles!

  5. Sofia - I'd say that BdO leans toward the masculine side of things, but there's absolutely no reason why I woman couldn't wear it. In fact, I think I'd prefer smelling this one on a woman...a bit predictable on a man.
