I read with interest Dane's review and the review he referenced on 1000fragrances, and do not disagree with anything either said; both reviews provide insight into the construction of Chanel's update to their classic. I will add my own subjective view.
On first application, Eau Première is big citrus with the classic Chanel bouquet of florals woven expertly through. In short order, though, vanilla blooms, and the effect is a revelation; all of a sudden I was reminded of Habit Rouge, and that of course made me think of Ernest Beaux's famous remark, and subsequent musings on the comparative impressions of vanilla as rendered by the houses of Chanel and Guerlain as recently reprised in our review of Spiritueuse Double Vanille.
Powder rises to surround the vanilla, and the fragrance takes on a very soft, enveloping feel. All accords d'accord. Before long, though, the lights dim to a quiet drydown in which a slightly musky sandalwood joins the vanilla and the fallen flower petals. Slow fade to black.
This is a beautiful and intriguing update of a classic; despite its meager longevity, I find myself wanting to wear it again.
