Funny! (Moschino)

By Dane

I opened up the door to the wonderful world of trashy fragrances with my love of Jean-Paul Gaultier's latest, Ma Dame, and here we are again in the land of smut (well, good smut.)

Funny! isn't actually trashy, but the thoughts of Moschino surely bring to mind visions of racy fashion and even racier ads. Funny! is more in the realm of "fun" and carefree, which, for the clever consumers, could replace much more expensive and not necessarily better fragrances from the likes of Hermes and Cartier.

Funny! opens with a blast of citrus - vivid, mouthwatering, and fresh. Sweet fruits, berries, and florals are the heart of scent, but are only there to emphasize the star of the show - tea. I'm starting to think that someone has created a standard tea-base that many perfumers are taking advantage of as of late (we won't name names or make assumptions.) From Ellena's The Verte and Osmanthus Yunnan to Giacobetti's The Pour Un Ete, the trend for tea has flooded the fragrance market. This tea is Antoine Lie's rendition (of Etat Libre d'Orange notoriety), which means it's innovative, interesting, and slightly twisted from the norm.

The bones of Funny! really remind me of Eau de Cartier, which technically isn't really about tea, but still shares many similarities. You're more likely to be reminded of the aforementioned Osmanthus Yunnan, albeit much less complex. Funny! is a cheerful alternative if you don't have the cash to drop at Hermes.

All in all, tea-base or not, this type of scent is fun and fresh without using cliched ozonic notes like Calone or dihydromercenol...and thank God for that.

Year: 2007
Perfumer: Antoine Lie
Notes: Pink Pepper, Red Currant, Bitter Orange, Peony, Violet, Green Tea, Jasmine, Amber, Oakmoss, Cedar
