Richard James (Richard James)

By Thomas

The problem with today’s gentlemen is that they have forgotten to be interesting. The fun part of manners and civility lie in disguising base intentions and a tendency towards bitter insults (read Oscar Wilde carefully if you have any questions). Take away the vileness, and you have…Magritte’s Son of Man. In other words, nothing to see here.

Speaking of manners concealing no vileness at all, we have Richard James EdT. This is pleasant in a pleasant way, pleasantness for pleasant’s sake. Richard James EdT is well-blended and completely inoffensive, but there’s not much of interest here. This one has a gentle pink fruity-barbershop-herbal opening, not particularly masculine nor feminine. Nor interesting, for that matter.

Past the opening, a dusty powdery rose note takes center stage and holds forth among the fruity herbal notes. There’s a slightly camphoraceous tuberose note which feels like a timid bit of throat-clearing among all the pleasantries. This goes on for a few hours, until drydown.

Drydown is pleasant as well, and completely inoffensive. This is a well-blended bunch of sandalwood, amber, oakmoss, and maybe a bit of tobacco/patchouli for that gentleman’s library vibe. Is this a winner? That depends on your inclinations and purpose. If you like elevator muzak, faded old-money gentility, and have zero capacity for snark, then this just might be your ball of wax.
