Initially, I had a hard time liking any of the Kilian scents. While they clearly contain excellent ingredients, the general concept turned me off. The tacky lacquered boxes with tasseled keys, the giant kegs sold for thousands of dollars, and even the name associated with them. Once again, I shouldn't be so quick to judge, as the collection is solidly crafted with a few standout performers.
Liaisons Dangereuses is one of the better selections. Allegedly inspired by the plum, LD is clearly a rose-focused scent. Rose oil is an interesting material. Firstly, it smells very expensive (which is usually reflected in the cost). Secondly, it doesn't really smell of roses. What does it smell like? Well, rose oil of course. Most perfume lovers will recognize rose oil for what it is, rather than what it comes from. There are several brilliant perfumes that replicate the actual smell of a rose using complicated formulas with dozens of ingredients, but LD doesn't do that. It smells of ripe fruit, rich rose oil, and dark woods. A beautiful scent from start to finish, and a great addition to the rose lovers wardrobe.
The price reflects the quality of the scent, and the over-the-top packaging. The only redeeming quality would be that one spray goes a LONG way. Keep that in mind when you calculate that each millilitre is $4.50 USD. Yikes.
