Gold (Donna Karan)

By Dane

I hate to be overly enthusiastic about something, but I'm very excited to have found Donna Karan's Gold (albeit a bit late). Most guys wouldn't think to wear a lily-based scent, but compared to most of today's sporty aquatic fragrances, I think the lily's watery aromas are an easy transition.

I've been looking for the perfect lily for some time now. My first attempt was Comme des Garcon's ethereal take. Close, but not quite right. Next came Frederic Malle's Lys Mediteranee. Again, close, but too photo-realistic and a bit suffocating because of it. Serge Lutens' Un Lys was the best match, a simple lily accord mixed with a subtle vanilla. Then came Gold, which, to me, is the perfect bowl of oatmeal. Out of the three concentrations available, the Eau de Toilette matched me best...a cool, cucumber opening, followed by a very realistic lily accord with the slightest hint of an amber base. The Eau de Parfum emphasizes the oriental aspects of the scent, introducing a more indolic, warm take, while the Sparkling Eau de Toilette adds citrus and lightens the composition to a whispy, summer scent. While most seem to prefer the EDP, the EDT balances all the elements perfectly and was exactly what I was looking for.

Excellent projection, excellent lasting power, and a beautiful bottle to boot.

  1. I'm glad to see this getting a review and some appreciation. I love Gold, but it doesn't get much love from perfumistas! Thanks for your review.:-)
