Eau de Cologne (2nd Opinion) (Helmut Lang)

By Thomas

I was already smitten by Cuiron and had to take the chance on Helmut Lang's other creation. Helmut Lang Eau de Cologne is likewise a post-modern creation, but just as the bottles have distinctly different appearances, so do the scents. Where Cuiron is packaged in a darker bottle, HL EdC reminds me of unsalted butter in appearance.

Well, HL EdC represents the minimalist side I don't understand. It's not bad, mind you. Just…minimalist and really really quiet. I like the scent but have to apply a lot for it to register on me, much less for anyone nearby to notice.

So, what does Helmut Lang smell like? Well, I've not had the pleasure of meeting the man himself, but the scent bearing his name is fairly linear, opening with faint flowers over a sugar-cookie-dough background. Eventually we get to a bit of buttery musk which is pleasant but not overwhelming and co-exists with the sugar-cookie opening.

Is this a masterpiece? It could be but I think the butter note is too far-forward for me. It balances well enough, though, never feeling oily or making me think I should be on a baking sheet somewhere. I think this scent would have fared better with a different name though – I called it Vespa Cookie Crotch.
