Often, when speaking of a master composition in any medium, we say it is greater than the sum of its parts.
Often, when reading the list of notes in a fragrance, I notice that I can't detect many of them, and that one or two ingredients seem to be running the show.
Fumerie Turque is an example of neither situation; it is exactly the sum of its parts, and yet this description does not do it justice.
The list of notes is lengthy, exotic, and, in the Lutens style, something like a caravan wreck. It doesn't seem possible that one could pick them all out in the finished product, but with the exception (for me) of juniper, I think they can indeed all be detected.
This is one of the most comforting fragrances I have found. It is sweet and smoky, chewy and leathery, animalic and flowery. All of these characteristics coexist not only peacefully, but blissfully.
Having said that... I will now let the list speak for itself.

Thanks for a great review. :) I really love my Fumerie Turque - actually I really love all of them from the Caractere line of SL.
ReplyDeleteBN is down and the members' blogs are keeping me entertained!
Chewy, you say?
ReplyDeleteI'll have to give my Fumerie Turque another sniff.
I love this stuff.
Yeah, somehow Lutens/Sheldrake manage to make masterpieces out of spice stew.
