Is it wise to flank the world's best selling perfume? Possibly not, but I think Chanel has done well with Eau Premiere. It's almost as if they realized that there was only one market that No. 5 didn't reach, and found a way to include that market to create some sort of uber super-perfume. That market? Men, of course.
Okay, I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. No, Eau Premiere isn't marketed towards men, and more than likely won't even reach the nose of most guys, but the potential is there! EP essentially takes the fruit and floral aspects of the original and tones them down, while at the same time upping the citrus content.
If I had to guess, I'd say EP is almost entirely synthetic, saving the lush complexities and powderiness of the original to their bestseller, and introduces a starker, modern citrus twist with hints of banana-like ylang and jasmine. A change like this will bring a new audience to Chanel's doorstep, all the while respecting the original's integrity. For a more in depth description of the technical aspects of EP, check out the fascinating post on 1000fragrances.
Not terribly long lasting and without much throw, but smart, concise, and likeable. Might even be more suitable to wear to bed than the original.
Year: 2008
Perfumer: Jacques Polge
It doesn't matter how many times they will change the face, I am still finding problems to love this fragrance...
ReplyDeleteI tagged you guys, again? maybe...
I've always loved No. 5...but found it too...something. Too peachy? Too floral? Too much. Eau Premiere is perfect for me.
ReplyDeleteI smelled it once over a year ago and honestly prefer the original. To me, personally, it feels stripped of all embellishments, this version without the aldehydes. I personally adore aldehydes. They give this particular formula sparkle. I have not smelled the EDP version which has been written ad nauseum by others. Apparently it was a misstep in the wrong direction with this venerable classic by Jacques Polges.
ReplyDeleteI do not wear it, No.5 in any form but appreciate it for what it is. An abstract masterpiece.
No. 5 in all forms smells like dishwashing liquid to me. It smells clean and bland. It's nice enough - likable.
ReplyDeleteI imagine an extremely fastidious person wearing No. 5. Neat, tidy, every hair in it's place, well groomed fingernails, etc.
EP was similar but lasted 2 minutes. I get cranky about zero longevity.
Wow! Georgeous!! I have not been so pleased to wear a scent since Donna Karan Chaos. I am inibriated!!
