Top 10 Women's Scents for Men

Boy, do I love a top 10 list (I know, enough of them already). So many fragrances are marketed to one sex when they shouldn't be. I realize it's easier for women to delve into the men's world of fragrance (list coming), but the right guy (confident guy) shouldn't care either way. Here are a few that someone decided were for women, but could easily be worn by men.

Dane's 5:

1. Mitsouko (Guerlain) - bitter, dry, mossy. Okay, peach notes are usually reserved for the gals, but I didn't even know there was one in Mitsouko until someone pointed it out.

2. Lovely (Sarah Jessica Parker) - SJP allegedly inteded for this to be unisex, but that would make for a risky first launch, hence the name and the frilly bottle. What's inside is different though, a musk for the masses.

3. Iris 39 (Le Labo) - dirty, dark, rooty patchouli. Why was this deemed women's in the first place???

4. Ormonde Woman & Ta'if (Ormonde Jayne) - both in the women's section of the website, both perfect for men. I actually prefer Ormonde Woman to Ormonde Man.

5. Cabochard (Gres) - many of the leathers of yester'year were daringly masculine. My favourite of the lot is Cabochard, although the recent versions are a sad reminder of how things never stay the same. Go vintage or don't bother.

Mark's 5:

1. Cuir de Russie (Chanel) - Beautiful, elegant, luxury in a bottle - but with dirt - or something - under the fingernails. Keeps 'em guessing.

2. Bandit (Robert Piguet) - This is beyond sex or gender, and into the realm of science fiction. Shocking, scary, green, earthy and outside of time.

3. Shalimar (Guerlain) - Feminine? Old fashioned? Bah. Don't believe the hype. Vanilla is the velvet glove that hides the cold, steely knuckles of bergamot and civet.

4. Labdanum 18 (Le Labo) - Layers of sweet labdanum and raspy civet, smoky birch tar and rank castoreum. Want more? How about vanilla, musk and patchouli? This is a roll in some dirty hay, indeed.

5. Nuit Noire (Mona d'Orio) - While the first thing one notices is a whole lot of flowers, almost immediately the odor of decay seeps through. Perfect for dates with those who are attracted to the undead.

  1. I am a man (at least I think so) and about a year ago I smelled Carthusia's Ligea. It reminded me of Guerlain's Shalimar. Well, I had to buy it.

Sometimes I will wear Ligea and I wonder if the androgynous scent on a guy is a turn-off or a turn-on for a woman or man nearby?

I went to the gym with just a drop of it on me and went running on the treadmill. Someone that was using the TM next to me, got off after I was on for five minutes. Am I too sensitive?

According to the authors of "Perfumes: the Guide", Ligea is second rate Shalimar. So what?

It would be strange if millions of people ended up smelling the same because they all took the advice of those authors and wore only the top ten perfumes suggested in those flawed pages.

You have an outstanding blog, by the way. It outclasses all the competition because it is not cute or inane.

  2. Thanks for your comments Andrew.

I'm sure you know how I feel...women's, men's, it's all the same. Beauty is beauty, and as much as I like to offer my opinion, when it comes down to it, you're going to wear what you like, and why shouldn't you!!

    Enjoy your Ligea!

ps - I only last about 10 minutes on the treadmill, so I wouldn't worry!

  3. I can see Le Labo's Iris 39 being for women, perhaps (not that there's a shortage of great masculine irises: Divine's L'Homme de couer, Odori's Iris, MPG's Iris Bleu Gris). But Labdanum 18?! That, I don't get...
