When I first encountered CDG's Incense Series, I had to calm myself as to not make a scene in the store with my excitement. I calmly walked over and lifted the first of the bunch - Kyoto. Very nice. Next, Ouarzazate. Couldn't pronounce it (still can't), but beautiful nevertheless. Third, Avignon. AH! Haunting memories of catholic church (not those kinds of memories you dirty...) flooded my mind. I was horrified! No one raised in the Catholic church could deny it, Avignon embodied it flawlessly. For me, that was a bad thing. Standing for hours on end in a crowded church is challenging enough, but having wafts of pungent frankincense blown in your face can make it unbearable.
Fast forward to today. Mark and I made a little swap for things we no longer wore. He received my bottle of Jasmin & Cigarettes, and I, CDG's Avignon. Avignon is one of the few scents that really challenged me, and I was hell-bent to overcome it. When the package arrived, I apprehensively pulled the bottle toward my face for a quick pre-whiff. Not so bad. What was the big deal? It still reminded me of church, but wasn't quite as overbearing as it once was. The sticky, cloying frankincense was there, as was the balsamic cedar notes, but it seemed a bit more approachable now.
I've since overcome my fear of Avignon, and although I can't say I wear it often, I'm happy to have it as part of my collection. A voyage back to childhood...in a bottle. For another similar variation, try Armani Prive's Bois d'Encens.
