Every now and then you come across something that approaches perfection. The proper balance between fresh, crisp, warm, and comforting. Ulrich Lang's Anvers 2 bottles this concept.
Enough with the fluff - A2 really is something special. Opening with a fruity citrus, then quickly morphing to a strange and wonderful rhubarb note with herbal and floral undertones. Nothing cloyingly sweet, nothing that screams "man" or "woman", but a perfect compromise somewhere in between. The ball keeps rolling from there as the floral notes become more prominent, with jasmine taking more of a lead. A warm, woody undertone creates a striking contrast with the cool green notes, but again manages to remain distinctly in the middle, with neither element taking over. The show ends with a quiet, mossy drydown, moving into a warm, sweet amber. It's amazing how something so subtle can be so complex.
A2 has some of my favourites notes in it - rhubarb, musk, jasmine and oakmoss. The list is too good to be true, but everything was executed at masterful levels and almost seems to be made for me personally (not that you won't love it too). A modern fruity chypre that takes the best of the classics and modernizes it into something truly outstanding.
UPDATE 2010: I'm not sure if this has changed, or I was in a *really* good mood when I originally wrote this. Having tried it again, a cheap synthetic note tramples all over the rest of the notes and leaves it slumming with your typical department store swill.
