First thing's first - I do not like vanilla. I mean, if we were eating it, yes, but wearing it...not so much. Although highly rated, Guerlain's Spirituese Double Vanille is enough to make me run for the hills. Given that, I strive to move forward and test vanilla fragrances objectively...which brings us to Vanilia.
Vanilia was created in 1978 by the brilliant Jean Laporte. The strange thing about Vanilia is that the vanilla doesn't take centre stage. Floral elements, and a peculiar smokiness combined with a candy-sweetness create an unusual and heavily copied structure (Vanilla Fields anyone?).
Most vanilla fragrances veer toward the feminine, and if they do appeal to our masculine sides, they often have an off-putting boozy quality. Vanilia falls directly in the middle. The sweetness of vanilla is there, but a dark smoke note tempers it. It's almost as if a vanilla-scented candle had just been blown out and you're left with both the edible notes in the air, along with the charred, black smoke from the wick.
A vanilla for non-vanilla lovers.
Year: 1978
