Ormonde Man (Ormonde Jayne)

by Mark
Ormonde Man opens with an astonishingly beautiful citrus and green wood accord, with juniper woven in so neatly that it took a moment for me to recognize it. The spices in the top notes combine to form something that is both greater than the sum of the parts, and something unexpected; I get a definite memory of shaving cream from this. This is no ordinary shaving cream, though; it is as if shaving cream were re-created using very expensive and exquisitely tailored materials, and educated in a Buddhist monastery. The scent is both beautiful and masculine, old-fashioned and timeless.

The juniper and bergamot give way and oudh bridges between the spices of the opening and the woods of the base. The heart is both spicy and sweet.

The drydown is a showcase of the best elements of vetiver, cedar and sandalwood, immaculately composed and bound together by a subtle touch of the remaining oudh and spices.

A very impressive fragrance, perhaps the worst thing one could say about it is that it is too perfect, and even too beautiful; one might wish there were a rough edge somewhere. Some might object to the powdery, barbershop quality in the beginning, but I defy anyone to deny that this fragrance smells great.

Perfumer: Linda Pilkington
