Musk Amber (Nemat)

By Dane

The contributors to this website have written reviews on some of the most beautiful, rare, and expensive fragrances on the market today. Not forgetting how unobtainable some of these treasures can be, we've also balanced them with more mainstream fragrances available at your local department store. Today is the first day reviewing something available for less than $20, and available at your local health food store or pharmacy, etc. Cost isn't always a factor in what smells good and what doesn't!

I was sniffing some rather expensive scents at a local boutique, when I noticed some grimy, greasy roll-on bottles sitting next to the cash register. I thought to myself, "what the hay", and sniffed the slimy little vial. Not bad. Not thrilling, but not bad. I rolled some of the oil on my hand, and all of the sudden a beautifully complex aroma emerged. The name of the scent (which I quickly bought) is called Musk Amber, and if you look hard enough on the back of the label, you'll see it's made by a company called Nemat International. I thought I had found a hidden gem, and rushed back to see if I could find any obscure info on the Internet. I was shocked to see that my secret new love had already been discussed half-to-death on other blogs and forums. Either way, it's still worth mentioning to those, like me, who weren't in-the-know.

Opening with a slightly sweet, warm amber, MA soon dries into a beautiful skin musk with rich, exotic wood tones. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was part of Montale's rich Aoud line, but alas, it comes in at a tenth of the price, and I have to say that I think I prefer it. Who knew. I've never been one to layer different fragrances, but something like this would be quite appropriate to lengthen the life of another scent, or create a sultry base under something lighter and fresher.

The picture above is completely unrelated to the fragrance...it's an oil burner available on the manufacturer's website and it made me smile.

  1. I even have men tell me that they buy Musk Oil to give to their wives because I smell so good
I have been wearing this Cabot Original musk oil since 1970, believe it or not. The first bottle I ever got was in Woodstock, NY, or somewhere up state New York. It may have been a year or so before that but in any event, I still wear my musk oil now (which is why I buy it by the dozen). My recollection is that it was called West Cabot Original musk oil...
