Luctor et Emergo (People of the Labyrinths)

By Dane

L&E was POTL's first release and was well received with the fashion community. It managed to get a ton of press, but the associations with things like Play-Doh kept me from seeking it out. I can't say I understand all the hype when better examples of this type of scent exist.

A friend of mine sent me a sample, along with a blob of her kids' Play-Doh for comparison (thanks L.), and the resemblance is quite remarkable! L&E still has quite a bit of charm though, and overall comes across as a very rich gourmande with floral nuances. Almond notes (heliotrope in this case) isn't something I can relate to easily, but if I had to choose one, I think I'd go for Caron's more elegant Farnesia (preferably vintage) or Frederic Malle's L'Eau d'Hiver over this. The feeling of L&E is very syrupy and it comes across as cloying. If you prefer a lighter take on almond, try Dior Homme's Cologne Blanche.

I must have been one of those kids, because L&E seems very edible to me, even if it does smell like Play-Doh. While it is a lovely scent, I'd rather eat it than wear it.

Year: 1998
Notes: Fresh Grasses, White Flowers, Vanilla, Precious Woods

  1. The power of suggestion is an amazing thing. Someday wear Luctor et Emergo again and think HAY instead of play doh. It's a beautiful fragrance once you remove play doh from your mind. You'll smell meadows and hay on an autumn day - just gorgeous.

  2. I'm going to have to try that. That exact trick worked for me on Chergui, so maybe it'll do the trick here too.
