Top 10 for Summer!

Summer is fast approaching...here are our West Coast vs. East Coast picks (and those that fall somewhere in between).

Mark's list:

1. Vetiver (Guerlain): This classic scent is light enough to wear in the heat, but has enough depth and darkness to be sensual. Wear it with jeans or evening wear, day or night, shaken or stirred.

2. Cologne (Thierry Mugler): Though composed largely of a synthetic, this cologne, which is actually an eau de toilette, is somehow comforting. It smells clean and inviting, and has good longevity.

3. Sel de Vetiver (The Different Company): This vetiver-centric fragrance opens with refreshing grapefruit, and mixes vetiver with the smell of an ocean swimmer's body drying in the sun. Summer vacation in a bottle.

4. Jasmin et Cigarette (Etat Libre d'Orange): Apply it lightly, and you get the sun on a wagon load of hay and jasmine. Apply more, and you get a just-lit cigarette being held by a woman wearing jasmine perfume on a warm night. It's summery either way.

5. Concentré d'Orange Verte (Hermes): Though most people seem to consider this a light and refreshing scent, I find it to be a wild ride through bitter orange, civet, cumin, and feral patchouli, with some mint, oakmoss and cedar along to keep the brass knuckles from coming out.

Dane's list:

1. L'Homme de Coeur (Divine): I bought this scent in the winter and thought it was great...little did I know how much better it smelled in the heat. Like a dry gin & tonic.

2. Philtre d'Amour (Guerlain): Summer isn't all about the beach. You still need a classy evening scent, and Philtre d'Amour combines fresh citrus with an elegant iris note that's perfect for balmy nights.

3. Bergamote (The Different Company): The perfect citrus. Period.

4. Cologne (Thierry Mugler): A clean musk that goes for miles. Like eternally smelling as if you've just left the shower.

5. Eau du Coq (Guerlain): Every summer fragrance-wardrobe needs a classic Eau de Cologne. Du Coq is my pick for its combo of citrus, florals and tangy lavender.

  1. Thierry Mugler's Cologne is excellent; I'm glad you both think so!

L'Homme de Coeur is such a lovely and fresh iris. Smells familiar, but is not.. (Perhaps I should just shell out and get it, instead of keep getting samples...)

TDC's Bergamote is just too expensive for a citrus cologne; I'd rather go for the Concentré d'Orange Verte (more of a bite).
