Ta'if (Ormonde Jayne)

By Dane
Continuing with my eternal quest for the perfect rose, I've come to Ormonde Jayne's Ta'if. OJ have some amazing scents, but for me, their men's offerings can't compete with the women's. Granted, it shouldn't matter who the scents were intended for, and it's foolish that they label them as such in the first place.

In one word, Ta'if if stunning. It opens with a peppered, fruity rose, which is really the only stage of the scent that might be deemed "feminine". Following that, spiced and wood elements enter with a host of other sultry flowers like orange blossom and jasmine. A dark, resinous vibe looms over the scent which almost makes it a fitting addition to Comme des Garcons' "Red Series", although the overall feeling reminds me more of Costume National's Scent Intense as the rose note fades.

The spices in Ta'if give a dry, dusty feeling, while the rose and other florals contrast with a dewy, earthy touch. Sweet, ambery notes stay on the skin for a remarkably long time in the drydown, but sadly the rose elements don't stick it out to the end. Both the Eau de Parfum (25%) and Parfum (30%) were tested and there was no discernible difference. For the difference in price, however, I'd personally stick with the EDP.

Although I'd rather just start with the best (this), OJ has a great sample set of all 10 fragrances (4 of them make it worth the money). As for my rose-quest, Ta'if would make a fine addition to my wardrobe, but doesn't quite end the journey.
