Rose is one of my favourite notes, and although classically an ingredient in men's fragrances, it has generally been associated with feminine fragrances as of late. This is why a modern masculine scent based on rose intrigues me so much. Paestum Rose is a great intepretation, and relies on the pairing of rose with spices, woods, and incense notes.
Incense, myrrhe, and oppoponax are all thick, resinous ingredients. Adding these to the rich quality of rose would usually equate to a heavy, cloying combination...but PR isn't like that at all. Although all these notes are clearly present in the composition, a general sense of transparency continues throughout the scent. This must have been a difficult task, not to mention with the addition of other heavy elements like peppers, woods, and musks. Duchaufour was one of the first to bring this style of perfumery to the public, and he has since mastered balancing all the elements to a perfect cohesion.
Paestum Rose is the star of Eau d'Italie's line and should be high on the to-try list for any rose lover...just try to overlook the shampoo-bottle packaging.
