Oud Wood (Tom Ford)

By Dane
Aquilaria is a species of tree that produces a fragrant substance in its bark to protect it from its surroundings. Oud oil, which is extracted from the bark, is a horribly expensive and rare ingredient in perfume. The chances of smelling the real thing are hard to come by. I have not had the fortune (yet) to come across an authentic sample of oud (also known as agarwood), so I cannot say for certain who's interpretation comes closest to the real thing, but one thing is for certain, Tom Ford's Oud Wood is a stunning scent.

Most of the oud-based fragrance I've sampled are very potent, rich affairs. OW is quite subtle and soft. It opens with a slightly sweet, green cardamom note, but soon after any sweetness vanishes and a beautiful ambery sandalwood note remains. There is a light dusting of pepper and a soft leather note present as well, and the drydown leaves a very faint vanilla on the skin. In many ways it reminds me of Hermes' Poivre Samarcande with its sheer, peppered wood notes. All of these notes together present a realistic impression of what oud might actually smell like.

Everything is very muted, but smells very expensive and luxurious at the same time. My favourite from the line thus far, but the longevity is very poor and I doubt I'd shell out for a full bottle at the current (high) price.
