Odeur 71 (Comme des Garcons)

By Dane

I could use a lot of descriptive words and analogies, or even quote the ridiculous list of advertised notes, but frankly, I'm not going to waste your time. Odeur 71 smells like Hedione, a synthetic jasmine isolate first used in Dior's Eau Sauvage, albeit in small doses, and later in extreme doses in 71's predecessor, Odeur 53.

Hedione (Methyl Dihydrojasmonate), in a few words, smells floral, metallic, and a bit stale. The only resemblance to jasmine might be a faint banana-like note. By itself, Hedione isn't very impressive. Like most synthetics, it smells bare and shallow. Hedione in a composition with the right ingredients, however, can make magical things happen.

71 picked up where 53 left off, added some new elements, and suddenly things became interesting (which, sadly, 53 was not). The only natural accords present themselves later on in the progression of the scent. Pepper, a few green florals, and even the "lettuce juice" come across due to the watery, faded qualities. Eventually 71 settles down into a mossy, woody-incense accord.

71 is fresh, a fine line between masculine and feminine, overall weird, and fitting to the CDG line (read - synthetic). The pink bottle tends to deter most guys from testing it, but opting for the crystal-clear Odeur 53 may (will) leave something to be desired.

The smell of steam...bottled.
