Following my disappointment with MB02, I figured I'd give one more of Mark Buxton's creations for Biehl a shot. MB03 is based on incense, and it is nothing short of beautiful.
MB03's predecessors in the Comme des Garcons line (2 Man and the Incense Series) have a stern, raw quality about them. MB03 has a softer transparency that makes is more wearable (keep in mind you'll be paying for that luxury).
Although it claims to lack topnotes, there are clear stages within the scent that keep things interesting and well balanced. A medicinal, resinous incense note opens the show before hot, spicy elements kick in to punch up the composition. Warm, sweet ambers and sandalwood make up the drydown, while the incense keeps a starring role though the entire life of the scent. A animalic quality is what really makes MB03 interesting for me though, and why it stands out from the competition.
A bit on the expensive side, but in my opinion, well worth the investment.
