Jasmin et Cigarette (Etat Libre d'Orange)

by Mark
Jasmin et Cigarette was the first fragrance from Etat Libre d'Orange that I ever heard of, and I was immediately intrigued; the image was of a femme fatale lightly perfumed with jasmine, lighting a cigarette. I spent some time trying to find a store that carried ELDO without success; it was Dane who finally provided me with a sample.

I was initially taken aback when, instead of conjuring Garbo sitting across the table from me in some speakeasy, I smelled... hay. In the sun. Perfumed with sweet jasmine. A happy hayride on a summer day. Very nice, I admitted, but where is the cigarette? Where is the darkness? Where is Garbo?

I decided I liked it, and that it was a good scent for summer days, but not much of a dark, brooding, smoky night scent.

Eventually I traded for a bottle of it, and in my new wealth I sprayed on more than usual. Voilà! Cigarette!

Jasmin et Cigarette goes on smelling like sun-warmed hay if you spray a little and a just-lit cigarette if you spray more. Underlying the hay/tobacco is sweet jasmine, which has a slight banana-bread scent. Over time, the sweetness subsides and the hay/tobacco is supported with cedar. The drydown is a quiet affair, with the amber and musk strumming gently in the background. I haven't smelled anything else like it.

Perfumer: Antoine Maisondieu
Year: 2006
Notes: Absolu Jasmin, Tabac, Foin (hay), Abricot, Feve Tonka, Curcuma, Cèdre, Ambre, Musc

  1. It's a beautiful perfume, as you said there's nothing quite like it. But sadly, on me at least, it's gone after a couple of hours.
