Intrigant Patchouli (PG08) (Parfumerie Generale)

By Dane
Let's face it - patchouli stinks. It was originally used to deter moths, and I'm guessing it was fairly effective. At some point people realized that it actually smelled rather good and moved on to using naphthalene to keep the bugs away instead (hopefully that won't work its way into perfumery).

Most patchouli scents in the niche market tend to pair it with sweeter, contrasting elements. Intrigant Patchouli does the opposite - instead of masking the inert rankness, it highlights it with a skanky musk note.

There are a few balancing honeyed notes present to keep random animals from mounting you, but overall it's quite the pungent skunk-fest. Once that combo starts to fade though, the usual amber/sandalwood/vanilla combo steps up and graduates IP into a comforting drydown. The beginning is much more interesting than the end, but overall it's quite a unique and striking fragrance.

Move over MKK...there's a new beast on the block.
