Fleurs d'Oranger (Serge Lutens)

By Dane
It seems as though Serge Lutens releases a "safe" fragrance every so often to balance the unusual, avant-garde scents that he directs so well.

Fleurs d'Oranger and Fleurs de Citronnier are relatively simple Eau de Cologne-style fragrances that are a bit dull, but good quality and easy to wear. FdO is essentially what it says - an orange blossom, but with lots of other white flowers (jasmine in particular) and a dash of cumin thrown in to keep you from falling asleep. FdO opens rather sweet and candied, but things settle into a nice, clean, slightly indolic orange blossom, followed by a light, white-floral drydown.

I happen to love orange blossom, so FdO is right up my alley, but I don't see it getting any awards in creativity. Having said that, rumours abound of the "bell jar" (read - bottle exclusive to the Paris SL shop) having a bit more kick to it. I've yet to confirm this, but will report back when I do.

Year: 1995
Perfumer: Christopher Sheldrake
Notes: Orange Blossom, White Jasmine, Indian Tuberose, White Rose, Citrus Peel, Hibiscus Seeds, Cumin, Nutmeg

  1. I beg to differ with your opinion on Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger. I believe the obvious thought would be to assume it’s a “safe” scent. Perhaps it’s the simple recipe that has misled you?
Life presses on, and in the crush, we ultimately realize that the simplest things are not what they seem. And so it goes with the scent Fleurs d’Oranger: not a hint of guile or sentimentality - its unpretentious and fresh, warmed by spice, for a modern woman of any age.
It is a complex scent that belies the simplicity of its ingredients. The complexity rests in the exactness of the chemistry employed in constructing it, not the ingredient list.
A few drops wrap you in warmth and the truth of white flowers. A woman can only move forward from there.

  2. ^^ it may wrap a woman in warmth and the "truth of white flowers"(?), but I'm not a woman, and I take my white flowers on the side.
