Essenza di Zegna (Ermenegildo Zegna)

By Dane

Choosing scents to review is half the fun of reviewing them. Typically, I choose scents that move me (one way or the other), but sometimes reviews should be presented for other reasons. This review was chosen because of the perfumers. One famous perfumer is of interest, but when two are combined, hopes go up. When feelings are neither here nor there, there isn't much point in even mentioning the scent, but alas, I wrote something anyway to prove that two brilliant minds in combination can almost nullify each other's stylings.

I would associate the Zegna brand with a mature, classy gentleman. I expected Essenza di Zegna to reflect this, but it comes across as something targeted at a much younger audience. That aside, it's not a bad scent.

Opening with a citrus and mint accord, EdZ is fresh and invigorating. Working with mint can be tricky business...one wrong move and everything turns to toothpaste. The pairing of mint with citrus is a classic combo because there aren't many other ingredients that could tame mint and keep it from taking over. Soon a juniper note joins in with a bit of spice leading into a generic, but inoffensive amber/musk drydown.

A bit dull, a bit safe, but still leagues above much of the competition in its inoffensiveness (that could be taken as both a compliment and an insult). EdZ is quite light...almost too much so, which may have been solved by the simultaneous release of EdZ Intense, but I cannot confirm this. The bottles are also fairly mundane...metal and glass. I found it amusing though that the travel spray looks like a crushed version of the original.

There's nothing wrong with EdZ, per se, but given the talent involved, I had hoped for more.

Year: 2003
Perfumer(s): Alberto Morillas and Jacques Cavellier
