Carnal Flower (Frederic Malle)

The main focus of this website is to review fragrances worn by men. While most of the fragrances in question would be marketed towards men openly, many others are considered unisex, or not labeled at all (the way it should be). Now and then you'll come across a scent that may veer more towards the feminine, but that would be completely subjective based on who was smelling it and their preconceived notions of what men or women should smell like. None of Frederic Malle's fragrances are labeled "man" or "woman" as other foolish companies do (*cough*lelabo*cough*).

This brings us to Carnal Flower, which has all the qualities of a typical feminine fragrance - flowers (tuberose, ylang, etc.) and fruit (coconut, melon). What makes CF great on a man is is how unpredictable it is. All of the notes are turned up to full blast in a rich, creamy and over-the-top fashion. Tuberose is the main star of the show, backed by the fruity notes of ylang, and the dirty, indolic qualities of jasmine and orange blossom. Together they make a loud, brash scent. Don't get me wrong though...CF is perfectly balanced in a way only a master perfumer could do. The green notes, animalic musk and indolic blossoms temper the creamy coconut and buttery tuberose and the perfume reaches a sublime perfection that no one could deny. I typically don't care for creamy tuberose scents, but I'd make an exception in this case.

Carnal Flower did the impossible - it made Fracas seem quiet and shy (I know...shut-up!) A word of caution: CF is essentially the strength of a pure parfum/extrait (25%), spray with a light hand. It lasted approximately 4 weeks on my skin.

Year: 2005
Perfumer: Dominique Ropion
Notes: Bergamot, Melon, Ylang, Jasmine, Tuberose, Orange Blossom, Coconut, Musk

  2. Pretty darn close! I remember the first time I tried it, I had a wool jacket on, and to this day I swear you can still smell...even after being washed several times! Potent stuff.
