Yohji Homme (Yohji Yamamato)

By Dane
The design of this bottle annoys me. Its tall and skinny and tips over easily. Ya ya, its clever and all...it has a little nipple on it so it doesn't roll away when you lie it down...whatever.

YH opens with a rich, candied black licorice note. If you don't like licorice...move on. Once the topnotes fade, a softer, almost edible scent is left. Coffee, chocolate and woods are present, but a synthetic aura adds an interesting twist that keeps you from licking it off.

Dark in nature, but light in substance. This scent shouldn't really appeal to me at all...I'm not crazy about licorice or anise, I generally don't like gourmande/foody scents (although technically its more of a Fougere), and you know how I feel about the bottle. Given all that, its hard to deny YH's beauty. I personally don't want to wear it, but I'd love to be surrounded by others who did.

I never approve of "homme" and "femme" being appended to the name of a fragrance, and this instance is no different. I have a feeling, if it were still in production, this would have been hugely successful as a unisex offering. Sadly, Proctor & Gamble pulled the plug on all of Yamamato's scents, so smart gents (and ladies) should hunt a bottle down on eBay while they're still available. Make sure to clear a large spot in your perfume cabinet to lie the sucker down though.

Year: 1999
Perfumer: Jean-Michel Duriez
Notes: Licorice, Rum, Coffee, Cinnamon.

  1. I got a bottle of Yohji at the local discount perfume shop. The owners seem to know that much of their inventory sells online or on ebay for double what they price it in the shop, and simply don't want to invest the time to sell through those channels. Yohji was pretty cheap and came with shower gel. I was convinced I'd go through the trouble of selling it online myself, and still might, especially since, given I took the last extant bottle, they threw in the tiny tester with my purchase. Now that I own it and have spent a little more time with it, a little more thoughtfully, I realize it's quite nice, though I've yet to wear it out. Interestingly, I also found a large tester bottle of Yohji Essential there. I've looked the pyramids up for both online and their notes are very different, yet they smell so similar to me I'm not sure why the brand didn't simply issue a single unisex juice. Both bottles are tall and cylindrical and fall often, knocking other perfumes over in my cabinet.

  2. If the tester I ordered is skinny and tall, it's going to spend its life at 90 degrees to vertical! LOL
