Rien (Nothing) as a title both does, and doesn't make sense. On one hand, it sure smells strong for something called Nothing. On the other hand, it could be a reference to a lack of ornamentation.
Essentially, Rien is a straight-forward leather. In a genre crowded with exemplary fragrances like Chanel's Cuir de Russie, Piguet's Bandit, and even Lancome's recently reintroduced Cuir, it's hard to find an angle to compete. Etat has stripped Rien down to a minimalist composition while still keeping it strong and interesting.
Subtle floral notes, a hint of incense, and some spices are present, but stay far in the background to let the synthetic leather notes shine. The use of ingredients like patchouli, oakmoss, and styrax would usually lead to a dark, heavy scent, but Rien maintains an almost transparent character when compared to other leather fragrances. Simple and unique.
