Parfum Sacré (Caron)

by Mark

"A flying carpet that is leaving" is how this fragrance was once described to me by a friend, and this is how I have thought of it ever since.

Parfum Sacré goes on in a swirl of smoky lemon, rose and spices, with an undercurrent of purring civet. It is at once vivid and fleeting, elusive and present. Trying to perceive its components causes them to flee, only to steal back at the edges of perception.

The lemon is left behind as we enter the heart, and vanilla takes its place. The incense becomes more pronounced. Now the Caron heritage becomes apparent. While Parfum Sacré is a more spare and modern fragrance than the classic Carons, some of the same ornate richness is still here, and all of the complexity.

The heart merges gradually and gracefully into a long and intoxicating drydown, with threads of jasmine weaving through the smoky pillar of incense, vanilla and woods. Every now and then a breath of rose escapes.

This fragrance wears close to the skin. Just when you think it has retreated, a movement can bring it back to life, hovering like that flying carpet, about to depart again.
