Outrageous! (Frederic Malle)

By Dane

Outrageous! was created by the great Sophia Grojsman for a Frederic Malle/Barney's Co-op collaboration. A glance at the notes reveals some typical natural-sounding ingredients, but one note reveals the entire concept of the scent - clean laundry. Outrageous is essentially a completely synthetic, paired down clean musk designed to appeal to Barney's Co-op hipster crowd.

The opening notes are a bit upsetting. A mix between a harsh cleaning product, astringent lime, and artificial green apple flavour...almost like a cheap piece of green bubblegum. The note itself is extremely high pitched and squeaky clean. The apple note soon vanishes to leave just the cleaning product. Aldehydes and other synthetics (salicylates) give the aura of brightly lit florals and herbaceous tones while synthetic laundry musks keep everything smelling completely artificial. This perfume could easily be used to mask the harsh scent of an industrial floor cleaner.

I have mixed feelings for Outrageous. On one hand, its a masterfully composed, purposely synthetic fragrance that has been stripped down to just the essentials. I appreciate the difficulty in doing this, but the scent itself comes across as more of a concept than something to be worn. There are scents that are instantly appreciated for their beauty, and then there are those that require a full explanation to go along with them.

Malle's beautifully simple bottle was made younger looking (read - tacky and cheap) for this "collabo".
