Grey Flannel (Geoffrey Beene)

By Dane

All perfume lovers go through specific phases. One of which is the "niche" phase. You've smelled the department store bottles, you've smelled the shelves of the pharmacy, and then you learn of little-known, almost secret perfume companies that are hard-to-find, expensive, and oh so coveted. Many of these niche companies deserve their treasure hunt status...sadly, most of them do not. It takes a lot of time (and money) to come to the realization that the mass-market stuff is just as good (with its own short comings, of course).

That brings us to Grey Flannel...one of the best deals in men's fragrance. A dark, masculine green scent, based on violet leaves. This is what men used to smell like before the 80's powerhouses and 90's aquatic nightmares hit. Fresh, natural, well-balanced, and classy. Those of you who are reminded of your dad when smelling GF were blessed with a dad with good taste.

GF opens with a brash citrus/galbanum combo. A bit jarring, but soon to be replaced by a slightly powdery, green floral. The drydown keeps its green character, but softens to a dry moss. A bit dated, a bit harsh, but will no doubt get more compliments than your $350 bottle of Clive Christian.

Year: 1975
Perfumer: André Fromentin
