Coromandel (Chanel)

By Dane

One of the more daring additions to "Les Exclusifs" collection from Chanel, Coromandel is all about patchouli. As with the rest of this collection, Chanel has the upper hand with quality ingredients mixed with the genius blending of Christopher Sheldrake.

Sheldrake already has one brilliant patchouli rendition under his belt with Borneo 1834 for Lutens, but Coromandel did somewhat of the impossible...it made patchouli smell feminine.

The opening of Coromandel is powdery and lush, but soon to come is a huge patchouli note that hits you like Naomi Campbell on a Monday morning. Pungent, but void of crudeness, the patchouli note possesses an incredible creaminess. Sweet, feminine chalky notes contrast with the damp, earthy smell of the patchouli and the result is truly breathtaking.

This could easily have been part of the Serge Lutens collection, and probably a popular one at that, but I find many of the scents in Chanel's collection to have almost a make-up smell that gives them a unique signature. Hopefully Chanel will release smaller bottles of these scents soon, as Coromandel (unlike 28 La Pausa) is quite tenacious.
