Bergamote (The Different Company)

By Dane

Bergamot is a magical little fruit that's found in many a scent, and its no surprise why. Beautifully fragrant and rich...almost the perfect centre between tart lemon and sweet orange.

Everyone's favourite, Jean-Claude Ellena created Divine Bergamote (now just Bergamote) in 2003 while he was the in-house perfumer for The Different Company. The change of name may be due to a trademark dispute brought by perfume company Divine (just speculation).

This simple composition is my favourite rendition of bergamot, mostly because it plays the lead role. You get a beautiful citrus opening with a green, floral background and a light musk drydown. A little kick of ginger gives it a little zing (something JCE would later reinterpret in Un Jardin Apres La Mousson). The rhubarb gives its a fruity angle without over-sweetening like other fruit would have. Bergamote stays close to the skin, but lasts quite a long time for a citrus scent (thanks to the musk I presume).

Why look elsewhere...the perfect citrus.
