3 (Comme des Garcons)

By Dane

Comme des Garcons 3 really epitomizes for me how really strange a perfume can be. Just when you think you've smelled it all, Mark Buxton will come along and turn everything upside-down.

3 is marketed as a "conceptual flower"...an imaginary flower that doesn't actually exist. I can think of a lot of ways to describe this scent, but floral isn't one of them. The topnotes can only be described as "sour". A fruity, vinegar-like scent mingled with spices and herbs. The closest comparison I can make it the opening of Cartier's Declaration with its cumin & citrus combo, only more abstract.

From there the scent really just calms down a bit, and dries to a woody base. Overall everything smells a bit more masculine than feminine (although marketed as unisex), anyone looking for something unusual would appreciate 3's aesthetic.

Comme des Garcons always have interesting bottles, and this is no exception. Following the format of the original EDP, 2, and White, 3 carries the trademark flask-shaped bottle into an interesting, tactile direction.

Update: I've been wearing 3 quite often, and Buxton's typical woody floral is becoming more apparent now that the sourness has become familiar. Quite a genius scent, but not for the impatient.
