Sarrasins was introduced into the "non-export" line of Lutens' fragrances in 2007. The second jasmin-based selection (A La Nuit being the first) focuses more on the fruity and leathery aspects of the flower.
The striking colour of Sarrasins is the first thing any person with decent vision would notice. A deep, almost black, purple that reminds me of ink (which was the point according to the press release).
The scent itself doesn't really reflect the colour. The opening is all jasmin, a bit indolic, as found in A La Nuit, but slightly winey too. A fruity, jam-like note becomes more prevalent soon, and an overall animalic, civet-like note remains in the background. The soft leather notes (more like suede?) keep the animalic notes from making the scent seem too "dirty", although the darker aspects are a welcome contrast to the fruitiness.
The longetivity is excellent and the scent itself is a beautiful jasmin rendition. The fragrance is only available in Paris, but it, along with the rest of the collection, are alone worth the trip!
